April 9, 2013 0 found this helpful Does any one know what size sewing needles I need for a Jones Rushby hand crank sewing machine 1920; serial# 268238 is the number on the machine? It came with 3 needles and no size on them or owner's manual. But, I have found some help online on how to thread the machine and how to take out the shuttle and thread it as well as how to fill the bobbin, but no one can tell me what size sewing needles I will need. I do know that they are round with no flat side on them any help would be greatly appreciated.
You can try taking a needle with you to a sewing shop, they may carry the needles there. You can also do a search using the term 'machine needle other parts for Jones vibrating shuttle machine'-be sure to omit the punctuation marks. Ebay also sells some parts for the various VS machines out there. Use the same search term there. A good source for info (and maybe a user manual on a free download) about your machine is ISMACS-if you are new to the machine ISMACS may be the first place to look: Use the alphabetic search feature to look up Jones machines, then look for the manual listed for VS machines-sometimes you have to look at a couple of different manuals to find the one for your model, for example the VS2 manual may be what you're looking for but might not.
Bookmark that site, there is a huge amount of info about all types of vintage and antique sewing machines on there! Good luck, I hope you and your VS are back to sewing soon.
Feb 18, 2017 Is there a way of finding out how old a Jones Sewing machine is? There were 2 actually, one was the Jones machine and the other was a Singer. As I already had an old Singer I thought I would have the Jones instead this time round.
There is growing interest in the VS machines, so it's good to see you asking about it. So many of us sew on the vintage and antique 66, 99, and variations of the 27s because those parts are pretty much interchangeable. As above, parts for the non-VS machines are NOT interchangeable with yours.
You have a very different machine that forms stitches in a completely different way than the lock-stitch or oscillating machines and putting the wrong parts in your machine can cause a lot of damage. I say this because oftentimes vendors have no clue what they are selling and will have what you need but under a generic name. Also, sometimes they have things misspelled, and what I want will show up through the misspelling when I go more generic in my search. I have won several auctions for interesting items because the item name or company was spelled wrong and no one else found it! I did an eBay and an Etsy search for you to see what I mean: Hope this is helpful and that you find exactly what you need!. In searches on eBay and Etna and even Google you will find quite a few vintage Montgomery Ward cams but very few of the sellers will know what model machines their cams will fit. There is very little information on the boxes that hold the cams so you may have to go by looking closely at the cams and comparing them with any you may have.
Not sure how you can compare if you do not have any cams for your machines. Do you have a manual? I have not seen the contents of an older manual for a machine that uses cams so not sure if that would be of any help. I believe Montgomery Ward machines were made by several companies and it may be that some other models/brands may have interchangeable cams but obtaining this information may mean doing a lot of research and asking questions on different sewing machine sites.
I am going to list some links that may have some information you could use but you may need the model number for your machine if you ask questions on any of these sites. Most sites will require that you become a member but that is usually free and only requires n email address. This site is if you wish to send an email and ask questions about your machine. Hopefully this person will respond as he has a lot of sewing machine knowledge. Maybe you already know what you need and none of this is needed - hope so - as I have searched for cams before and they are very difficult to match to one model machine (Singer may be the exception). Good luck with your search.
